Just looking through your post, initially I think Indonesia is the perfect destination for both of you guys. After considering a bit, I vote for Vietnam. 10 days in both countries are supposed not enough for you to explore. Nonetheless, we still can do a trip:
Hanoi - the heaven for street food (Pho, Banh Mi,etc)
From Hanoi, take a train to Quang Binh - Tu Lan Cave Expedition 3 days 2 nights
Fly to Ho Chi Minh City, dynamic nightlife but you don't enjoy it. So miss it, then go head to Mui Ne for (kite and wind surfing). If you are a big fan of surfing, you will be disappointed a little bit cuz the waves here are not so strong like in Bali.
Bus to Nha Trang for stunning beaches and scuba diving
Hope this helps :)

Vietnam is a beautiful place. Given you both are into nature, you should check out the Sapa Valley. It is very picturesque! :D

Its better for you to visit Vietnam when compared to Indonesia.

Hey there! If you're really limited on time, it's like you mentioned, avoid doing a head to toe travel of the country as you simply won't enjoy it, not to mention 10 days is not much considering the size of both countries. If your boyfriends enjoys sea activities, why not consider Bali in Indonesia? The food's good, but its a lot of commercialized international cuisine due to the large tourism influx. Alternatively, you could consider Ha Long Bay in Vietnam similarly for water activities, and a wider variety of street food.

You could fill up the remaining of your time by visiting the capital of either country you choose. 2 cities would be more than enough to fill up 10 days.

If you are looking for 10days of busy tourism, seeing lots of different things, then Vietnam is probably best. It is very small compared to Indonesia and very easy to get around. By comparison, Indonesia is a massive archipelago and getting around involves airplanes and airports.

That said, if you are prepared to stick to one part of Indonesia, then they are probably comparable. Java is an amazing place, probably about the same size as Vietnam and very easy to get around. If I were planning three weeks in Java, I would do Central Java (Yogyakarta, Solo and Semarang - these are all very close together), East Java (Malang and Mt Bromo) and then pop across to Bali.

I know, Bali isn't Java, but if you're in East Java you might as well because it's so close.

Good luck!

Instead of flying to Bangkok all the way on a full-cost airline, you can fly to another hub such as Singapore or Hong Kong (which are served with more flights from the USA, thus cheaper). Then, take a separate flight from there on one of the many low-cost carriers in the region such as AirAsia

Frankly, I am surprised that no one has suggested you do both. If budget it not a constraint, you can do Bali and Gilli Islands and Vietnam in 10 days. I scuba dive and I can tell you Indonesia has some of the best diving spots in the region for all skill levels. 10 days are definitely enough to get a good taste of any country and if you dont mind a bit of a rush, you can squeeze in two. I have lived in and traveled SE Asia for many years and will be happy to help you plan an itinerary if you like.
