Hi guys,

We are planning a trip to New Zealand. We don't want to spend a fortune on travel since the flights are already so expensive from East coast. We are considering a backpacking trip. We have never done this before so any help would be much appreciated. Oh and if someone would like to join us or meet us there, that would be great too. Me and my wife both enjoy mountain biking and hiking so that would be one of the things which we would love to do while we are there.

Have a Google for the NZ Department of Conservation site which lists hikes in each region. As well as day hikes there are multi day treks such as the Great Walks.

Usman - from the name I'm thinking you are pretty local to me. My wife and I have done NZ from New York and while it's not cheap, it's not bad once you get there. of course that all depends on your budget

We found it was worth using the BBH hostel network to get good, clean private (and affordable) rooms almost everywhere on the north and south islands. On both islands we rented cars from some of backpacker/popup van rentals (afraid I don't recall any names but any of the hostels in Christchurch or Auckand there should be able to point you in the right direction) and found it convenient and cheap to really get around. Internet makes booking rooms in advance very easy - and the roads are pretty straightforward.

Depending on how much time you have, there is a ton to see, hike and do. Without more information about time and budget, I can't really advise you much more, but feel free to pick my brain if I can be of help.

Going up the sky tower is a must, you get to see the whole city from up there, try eating at the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower - its called Orbit and they do great food and you get to go on the observation deck for free.
