I am looking a universities in the Queensland area. I really like looks of the programs at James Cook University. I'd probably be living in Townsville. Although they have another campus in Cairns, but wouldn't offer all the classes i'd need.

Any info on what Townsville is like? Things to do. Is it nice place to live? Touristy? I love the beach and to dive, so it seems as though it would be a good location for that.

Hi lisay,

I spent a couple of days in townsville last year when I was travelling down the east coast. It's a nice town, fairly quiet compared to Cairns, but also less touristy. A bonus is that it is close to Magnetic Island and one of my favourite dive spots in the world the Yongala Wreck. We also found out about free sailing at the beach club on wednesday afternoons. You just need to go to the main boat house/beach club at the harbour around 5 pm and they hook you up with people who are taking you out for a race. Sailing was great fun and also party with locals afterwards;)!
I'm sure you'll enjoy living in Townsville,

I lived in Cairns for 4 years and visited Townsville a few times. I didn't like it as I found it to be a lot quieter than Cairns and found there wasn't a whole lot to do there. There are so many things to do in Cairns and its such a beautiful place.
Townsville does have great restaurants and a great waterfront - and of course Magnetic Island is really nice.
If you live in Townsville you can always visit Cairns when you have spare time, A flight is much quicker than driving though (about a 4 hour drive)

Thanks! I have to check out that wreck dive. I may see if I can split my time between the two campuses.
