Hi all,

I'm travelling to Punta Cana in less than two weeks and I wanted to see anyone can give me any tips.

This will be a more relaxing trip, but I want to do a few excursions. It looks like there are a lot of options online and I want to narrow it down to a few. Is there any excursion you would highly recommend? I at least want to do a catamaran tour and snorkel tour. Can anyone recommend a certain area/beach that I should go to for either?

Any type of alcohol you would recommend taking home to Canada which we don't have here?

Would you recommend - snip - ?

Any tips would be helpful! :)

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]

I have not stayed at Punta Cana, but someone who did wrote
> Trip to Catalina relatively slow and boring
> beach nice. Snorkeling poor
> Saona Beach. A little more open and inviting than Catalina. All
>in all, we preferred it to Catalina.

I went to Saona and did not think much of the snorkeling there at all.

If you are interested in colonial architecture and history, you might like a tour to Santo Domingo, and in season you can do the whale watching tour.

Unfortunately greatgrandma is right.
I spent 2 weeks (or was it 10 days ?) in Punta Cana, these were the borest days of holiday ever. I was in all inclusive, so surrounded by - sorry to say - Canadians who were drunk from morning (well, midday when they emerged) till ... at least when I went to sleep.
I enjoyed these holidays because my wife had been working in Haiti and we reunited in Punta Cana, with or eleven months old son at the time. But there was nothing to do. No snorkeling, no city to go to, no nothing.
Relax, read, go to the beach of your hotel sleep etc.

I've looked at activities around Punta Cana (on google maps) and there are a distressing number of captive dolphin swim activities.

Samana is north west of Punta Cana and there is a small whale museum there. La Romana is a little down to the south, and Saona Island is in a national Park. You may be able to rent a car and explore but the infrastructure in the DR is quite lacking in many respects and I wouldn't want to drive myself in Santo Domingo. There are not a lot of people outside the tourist areas who speak English, and even in the tourist areas you might have difficulty if you do not speak Spanish.
