We are planning a family road trip from Buffalo NY to Londonderry New Hampshire via Vermont. We would like to know what would be the most scenic routes and drives and interesting places to stop. Our interests are quaint towns, scenic routes that give us an old world flavor. Would like to make just one stop for a night somewhere in vermont. What are our best options? Thank you.

From Buffalo to Bennington, VT (west side of Vermont) is 5+ hours if you go on the NY Thruway which does not go through picturesque villages. With a 5-hour drive, you aren't going to do much sightseeing along the way. If you want a slight diversion when you are nearly to Bennington, cut up to Saratoga Springs which is a gorgeous area. That would make the trip from Buffalo to Bennington 6 and a half hours plus any sightseeing in Saratoga Springs if you stopped.

I do recommend Bennington, VT as your stopover. It's a nice town with a lot of sights and is about as much driving as I'd want to do in a day. I'm trying to think of scenic routes that give an Old World flavor and am coming up with no ideas. Why not forget Old World and try for Historic American flavor? There is a lot of fascinating history in the northern NY and southern / mid-Vermont area.

Saratoga National Historic Park with the Battlefield. https://www.nps.gov/sara/index.htm

The Saratoga Springs Spa State Park is about as Old World as you will get and it is also historic American. Bring glasses and you can taste the different sparkling waters. https://parks.ny.gov/parks/saratogaspa/details.aspx

In Bennington there is the Bennington Battle Monument, the Bennington Museum and the Dollhouse and Toy Museum. http://www.dollhouseandtoymuseumofvermont.com/dollhouseandtoymuseumofvermont.com/welcome.html

It's too bad you don't have more time for the trip because you are going through some beautiful country with fascinating history. Hope the above gives you a couple ideas.

Have a great trip.
