Hi fellow travellers,

I am planning a trip to Bulgaria this April and have my destinations sorted out a little.

I am almost completely relying on public transport and know about the main connections between cities and smaller towns.

What I am still not sure about though is the frequency of buses in the area between Karlovo, Kazanlak, Shipka/Shipka Pass, Gabrovo and Veliko Tarnovo. I do know there are buses, but is there a chance I will be stuck at the Shipka Pass and can't move on towards Veliko Tarnovo that same day?

I will probably hire a taxi for (part of) the day to visit Buzludzha Monument (from Kazanlak or Shipka) and then try to get a bus from Shipka/Shipka Pass.

Does anybody know the price of a taxi (per hour, km?) and wether or not I might be able to hitch a ride down towards Gabrovo in case that it is necessary?

Thanks!
Michael.

I rented a car there last year, in Bulgaria. The best I can tell you is that hitchhiking is not uncommon in Bulgaria, and I feel confident you'll get a ride if you need one. I have to assume that there is a bus schedule online somewhere that can help you with your connection problem.

The one thing that I was told in Bulgaria, several times, is that cab drivers are scam artists. This is not unique to Bulgaria and I wrote an article about it once, but was I was told about it, unbidden, several times on this trip.

Veliko Turnovo is a neat city.

That is about the extent of the help I can offer. I wish you a good trip.

Thanks! There are several websites that give travel options but sometimes I know they are not complete. There should be a bus from Kazanlak to Shipka every half hour or so, but it's not in there. Guess it depends where they get there information from in the first place.

Good thing about the taxi drivers. Might arrange something through my guesthouse/hotel or so to get at least the best one possible..:)

Thanks again, much appreciated!
