Hi All,

This may sound daft, but can you apply for a Australian working visa while in a different country and it be granted?

Assuming you mean a Working Holiday Visa: Yes. As far as I know, the only requirement for applying for your first year WHV related to your physical location is that you're outside of Australia for the entire time between when you apply and when it's granted.

AUD $5000 (which is nearly £3,000) is the usual amount that is advised as enough to meet the "sufficient funds" requirement, yes. That isn't checked up on in any way (unless things changed lately without me hearing about it), but it's really strongly recommended to have at least that, and there to protect you, as it's a lower bound on what pretty much any backpacker ends up needing (I've seen too many sob stories on these forums of people who went with less, and had to return home after a month or two because their money had run out without them having managed to find a job yet).

My personal experience is that I'd advice trying to have at least twice as much.

Current costs for a WHV can be seen through the form on the official government page for the WHV. Make certain to also arrange for it through there; any other website is a third party, which will make you pay more than is necessary.

The cost changes every so often, and might vary slightly based on currency. Right now the cost is GBP 275, or AUD 440 (which is closer to GBP 250, but I don't know if you have the option to actually choose which currency to pay in).
