Hello, just joined this site for the same reason why you may see some others join over the next few days (upcoming closing of a different travel site). Will start to slowly add some of my existing and new blogs over time, because I would like to have them somewhere. I am from what they call the Green Heart of the Netherlands. If any questions about my area (or in the future about the places where I have been), feel free to ask.

Welcome! You'll be the third exodus to join travellerspoint in the last year, after virtualtourist and travelpod. Which one is closing now?

(As you might guess from my name, I'm Dutch too.) :)

If there's any features from your old platform which you liked in particular, and which seem to be missing here at travellerspoint, please feel free to ask about them in the System Talk forum. We'll hopefully be able to give you pointers for how to do equivalent things using the features we already have, and otherwise it might be something which Peter, the admin, will put on the backlog of things to implement in the future. (He's currently mostly busy building some features to make the virtualtourist members feel more at home here, so don't expect that to happen swiftly - but all the same, he's pretty responsive, so it is a real possibility.)

It's Travbuddy that's closing, Sander.

Welcome, westwind. :-)

You'll be among many ex-VT-ers here and I know there are a lot on Travbudy too. Whether they'll come to TP I don't know: the closure of two sites within a year or so is hard to take, particularly when so many had been active members of VT for 10+ years.

Youch; that really sucks for those VT members which decided that TravBuddy matched their interests better than Travellerspoint did.

Fingers crossed that Peter is getting close to revealing the new tips and profile pages, and that those will make this place feel a little bit more like home for those that need it.

Ooh, and I see that Kathrin posted this over on travbuddy:

I wrote to Peter, the owner and admin of Travellerspoint, about the closing of TravBuddy.

Peter answered that you all are "more than welcome" over there, and that he might even think of a way to transfer TB content to TP. Just mentioning that he has done this successfully for us VTers as well as members of the equally axed Travelpod site last year by setting up a special programme that transferred photos and text.

Heh, yet another import script. Peter must be getting really experienced with those by now...

Thanks for the welcome all of you. You are right about the origin (Travbuddy). No idea what most of them will do, but one thing that I saw is that the technology is not that much different.
Eric and David, the founders of TB from the first hour, have developed a tool so that everybody can download their own content. For the pictures that works sort of OK, for the blogs and review you only can get it back in raw text format. So, then it takes a lot of work to make it look half way decent again. I just tried it out with one of my blogs and just some of the pictures belonging to it. Some direct transfer tool would be something, you might make a lot of people very very happy.

Thanks anyway (bedankt).
Jacques

I wonder why they are all closing now is it just a money thing?

I'm not surprised at all that it's going under. It was no secret that the owners had essentially put the site on autopilot some time ago and wandered off to more lucrative pursuits. That's why I didn't bother joining that one, although I looked in occasionally to see what former VT mates were up to. Decided to come here as Sander and Peter went out of their way with warm welcomes and VT file download help, if desired. :O)

Like some of the rest of the former VT'ers, I'm looking forward to anything Peter can do to make this site much more user-friendly and help our expats from that site "feel more at home" here. Would love to contribute material if-and-when that happens!

Speaking of VT, a wave to the gang, and Leics2 especially as I see that you might be logged in. Aforementioned distractions continue....

Waving back to Kate, and welcoming all TB members who've moved here, especially former VTers. I understood why some of the latter opted for TB, as it had a closer format to VT in terms of reviews, but once that facility is added here I think TP will prove to be a great home for all of us. I've certainly enjoyed my first year here
