1. You can arrange photos to fall exactly at the point in the text where you want them, with several of the same subject
(...) Number 1 is one of my biggest annoyances, sometimes even keeping rewriting to try to match the text with the photos, instead of the other way...

Hahaha... yes, happy to finally see I was not the only one struggling with this on TB. It took me long time often to get it right. Getting my partner more annoyed than me, to be honest ;)
I am just starting to find out how to do this here. There is another active/new thread in which some more tricks specifically for arranging your photos are given, and I believe it's quite helpful. Will try it out later on the blogs that I already made here.

Hey everyone, I think this thing is ready :)

Please read the following carefully before starting the final import stage.

There are some options to choose from, which you should understand.

1. You can pick exactly which blogs/trips you want to import. You can choose to only import them as trips or only import the blogs. When I'm talking about importing trips, I mean they will show on your map here on Travellerspoint. You might want to skip some trips if you have already mapped them for example.

2. Reviews are not imported yet (I don't have any structure to import them into just yet). You can choose to ignore all your review photos at this point. Then, when the time comes you'll still be able to import them. You can also ignore photos from blogs that you aren't importing.

3. You can choose to import all your entries into a single blog, or you can split them up into individual ones. It's totally up to you. But once done, it's hard to go back and fix all that up and do it again, so choose carefully :)

4. You can choose to save the entries as draft rather than have them published straight away. The upside to them being drafts is that nothing will be shown on TP yet until you go through and publish them. The downsides are a) that you have to go through all your entries individually and republish them and b) it will send notifications to your friends of every newly published entry which could get annoying (apologies in advance to anyone who might get annoyed by that.). I think I'd probably choose to just have them published straight away.

NT01 (Nolan) has already had a go at this import and everything seems to have worked as planned. Example of an imported blog here.

Please note that this is a possibly time consuming process, so be patient :)

Once you have submitted your import preferences, it will turn into a page showing the status. It will show how much has been completed and how many items are left in the queue (for most accounts that's photos being processed).

Now, I should also say that the data stored so far will be kept exactly as it was even after the import, so if we need to re-do the import later, we can do that. It's not a irreversible process.

I think that covers everything important. The page to start the final import process is here - please only do this after reading what I wrote above

Thank you, Peter for creating this feature which allows blogs to be imported with minimal effort. :) I have practically captured most of my blogs, plus about almost 5,000 photos.

However there are certain things people should be aware before they import the blogs:

1. The import process may have error messages as it goes along, just ignore them in the meantime. Wait until it says that the task is completed. Definitely a few hours at the very least if you have quite a number of photos (these take the longest in the import process).

2. Blogs are uploaded as drafts, so they are not immediately viewable by the others. To change this, you must edit each individual blog and entry and choose the "Publish" option so they will be viewable. I'm not aware of the defaults as to who can view (public, friends or self only), so I am still figuring my way around choosing which blogs I want to make public and those only viewable to Travellerspoint friends.

3. The photos that get imported still have to be rearranged. I find cross referencing the filenames of each photo and then deleting or rearranging the unnecessary ones a bit of a formatting issue as it is quite tedious. I think it may be easier to delete all the photos and upload them one by one if you still have the originals - that way, you can choose where to place them within the blog text.

If somebody has a better recommendation for addressing issue no. 3, that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Nolan

This is only if you choose that option. By default they are published immediately. This is why it's important that people read my last post before starting the import :)

Published blog entries are public by default. (Draft blog entries can only be seen by you.)

The only alternative for published blog entries is to password protect the entire blog (so all blog entries on the same subdomain), which means only people who know the password can see it. There is no option which integrates with the "friends" feature here to make things friends-only (although you could of course manually give all your friends the password of a password-protected blog).

Hi Peter,

First thanks for the effort. I would to ask one question: supposing I choose to have my entries published straight away, would it still be possible to edit them later?

You can edit any blog entry at any time - I always have to edit mine after publishing when I see silly errors or don't like how the photos are arranged ;)

Got an error
And now I'm stuck with
'Your import is under way'
153 completed 102 not completed
What to do now???
