I cannot find a chat or a way to write to my friends here. Any suggestion?

There's a private message system, which you can access through the "My Messages" menu item in the far top right, and through people's profiles (the big green "send message" button).
Unfortunately we've had a lot of trouble with spammers signing up and sending spam through private messaging , so the feature is very restricted for newly registered members. Those limitations should gradually ease off as you become more active, until you won't ever encounter them anymore after the first month or so, but for the moment they might be rather annoying.

Beyond that all messaging is public; either on the forums, as comments on blog entries, or through the "groups" feature.

So, I have to wait for a month to write "hello" to my friends ex VTers.

No, you shouldn't have to wait a month! Try it now (write to me if you like) but be careful not to include any links or anything the spam filters might pick up as advertising. A simple "Hi, I'm here!" shouldn't cause any problems I would think, but if it does, massage me on TB or Facebook and I'll alert the mods to assure them you're genuine :)

Right after I joined, I sent a message to Nolan to make him aware that I am here, and after I sent him a friend request. It worked right away after I confirmed my e-mail (and he received the message and he answered me ).

The limitations - besides email address confirmation - are that you can only send a limited amount of messages per day. That limitation should get less limiting every day you're here. (I don't know the real numbers, but for example you can only send 10 messages on your first day here, 11 on the 2nd day, 12 on the 3rd day, and so forth.)

With casual use, you won't run into them, but if you want to contact a lot of people, then you will.

This is a good system to weed out spammers which TravBuddy didn't have. We relied on fellow members to report posts of spammers who were eventually removed by the admins. Of course, spammers can wisen up and post as many times initially within the said limitation, but with close supervision of the moderators and admins, they can be removed for good.

I haven't posted blogs or as many photos yet, but there should be a way to ensure that we filter out spammers but keep legitimate members. And prevent abuse of reporting blogs that some dislike but may be helpful to the rest of the members.

Have you ever thought of creating a public comments feature profile-to-profile so members can leave messages/comments on each others profile. VirtualTourist and TravBuddy had such things and it made the sites a bit more social and conversational for members to chat with each other in a communal way. While forums, private messages and groups are good, I think profile-profile public comment/messaging would add an extra social dimension to the site. I think this may have been what Maurizioagos was inquiring about, something like the profile comments area that VT and TB had.

I agree that would be a great addition to the site, although I’m conscious Peter has a long to-do list ;)
