Hello!
If you go to Chaing Mai,I highly recommend you to visit Laos too! You’ll meet many backpackers.
From Bangkok, take a train for 12 hours to Vientiane then move up by bus to Vang ViengーLuang Prabang. From Luang Prabang, you can travel by bus to Chaing Mai.
If you like adventure it is :)

Alternatively, a backpacker thing to do is the slow boat into Luang Prabang. There are loads of travel agents in Chiang Mai who can fix you up with a minivan to the border at Chiang Khong and a night's accommodation there. Then you get a two minute ferry ride across the Mekong to the Laos side and then get a slow boat down the river. The first day is about six hours and you stop at Pak Beng and negotiate accommodation (about USD10). The next day is about eight hours on the boat, arriving at Luang Prabang at sunset. There'll be another fifty or sixty on your boat doing the same thing.??

Yes,I heard that boat is good although I never had it :) Actuarlly I'm sometimes backpaker, sometimes not. But traveling with mini-van there was very nice experience even it's bump road!!
Thailand,Vietnam,Bali.. those countries has beaches. Laos is the country which have not face to ocean. :P

I had a trip booked flying to Bangkok for a month then Vietnam for 2 weeks then Bali for a month. My partner has backed out, so was wondering if this trip is still advised even if I went alone? I have the time booked off work so may as well go haha

It's perfectly alright to travel alone in these places. People there are very accommodating and you can also have self time when you travel alone.

Most of southeast asia countries are safe to travel alone, except for some islamic sates if you're scared of the IS In Thailand and Vietnam, I'm sure it's safe to go on your own. But be careful about some street scams and theif sometimes.
