aaw first VT and now Travbuddy. I didn't really participate to forum discussions that actively anymore for the past few years but I still browsed the TB travel blogs for inspiration usually few times per month.

Hi all,

glad to see a lot of familiar names here :-) Thanks Brian. Even though I wasn't as active the last few years as I was 5-10yrs ago, I still enjoyed reading the blogs and forum topics. It's going to take some time for me to get use to the set up here in TP so for those who have been here bit longer, please have patience with my questions :-) I look forward to reading about everyone's trips as well as blogging my own.

Hi all, I also arrived here, used to be "skyter" on TB.
checking this place and .. missing lots of TB features that connected travellers. Maybe this site is still in progress and will get better.
BTW, I uploaded a profile pic and then saved. But the pic doesn't show in the profile. Anyone had this too?

@ dan: To choose a photo as your profile picture, you have to tag it "me". You can also have a whole series of photos tagged "me", which then change at random.

On TB we used to get in touch with features like "locals" of a city, or "other travellers" visiting there, "X is visiting your city next week", "Y wishes to visit Chicago", vouches.. and so on.
There were plenty of ways to cross TB paths and that s how we had all those unforgettable encounters.
I hope I am wrong but here I don't see any social tools other than the forum.. mainly a trip planner with guides

There are also groups (under the community menu), comments on photos and blog entries, and the friends feature (which'll notify you of activity by your friends if you want it to). But you're correct, the type of social notifications you describe don't (currently) exist here, as that's never been the main focus (the "travel companions" subforum serves that purpose a bit, but in a less structured way).

Peter is surely paying attention to requests for such features, though. He already has some pretty ambitious new features on his backlog which were requested when VirtualTourist shut down, and it's relatively slow going, as he's currently the only one programming on the site (I think) and of course developing new features gets interrupted when there's maintenance work needing to be done, or an emergency import due to another travel site shutting down - but he has a great track record with delivering new functionality, so who knows what the future will bring? :)

In the meantime, I'd recommend trying to approximate what you want to do with the features that are here (so the next time you're travelling to another city and want to meet up with people there, just post a thread in the travel companions forum for that purpose) - and see how it goes. That'll make it more obvious to everyone what does and doesn't work well right now, and where the gaps are that really need some programming to be filled in. :)
