Hey everyone,

Just found out today that Google Maps is about to start charging a hefty fee for using their mapping API. Up till now, our usage fell within their free tier and hasn't really cost anything. In a month that all changes and the cost will go up to $700/month based on current usage of TP maps.

So, this will require some changes as I don't really want to eat that extra cost.

I'll most likely be changing the mapping engine entirely to something that I know will be more affordable.

The maps will end up looking a little different. I'll probably take the opportunity to clean up a bunch of code at the same time.

The one thing that I know I can't really do better is the autocomplete of placenames when adding stops. Google provides that list of locations and there simply isn't anyone who comes even close to handling it. Some handle English place names reasonably well, but in particular when it comes to foreign languages, there just is no competition. So there will be a drop in that functionality as I'll have to settle for second best. I'm even tempted to use our own list of place names which would be extremely limited, but also tightly controlled. We'll see how that goes.

Anyway, I thought I'd better give the heads up that you can expect some new things in that area.

As if I needed more on my plate

Maybe with an option to add/change places ? Or am I putting even more on your plate with this request ???

$700/month is way too much for a website like this, how dare they!

Yes, I'd definitely have to allow people to add places with my rather limited (but clean) list.

I'll work something out :) I've been meaning to do an update of the mapping area for a long time now, so I guess I'll choose to see it as a positive development.

I know you'll come up with the best solution and that won't include paying Google such an exorbitant sum!!

The travel map feature is one of the best things about Travellerspoint. The granularity that has been available is truly fantastic. I hope that a reasonably extensive new list of place names can be compiled.

What about splitting the "google" bill between any members with more than 350 posts.

YES! nobody wants to pay extra money on google maps. It should be afforded to all common people. so, I hope you will be giving best to us.

I assume you've tried Apple maps. I don't know if Acme mapper would be a possibility

That’s built on top of google maps as well. So not an option I’m afraid. Haven’t actually checked Apple maps, but I don’t think they have an api to be able to use it the way I want. I’ll check though 🙂
