>At least you are being honest about this not being a philanthropic exercise

Honest now.. It would have been better not to present the idea as a sort of philanthropic venture in the original post, because that is clearly not the intention. Beg-packing seems a better name for what you propose to attempt, especially as you specifically reference youtube videos.

Just a note that all the comments made by Karazyal above also apply to males. Males can be and are raped and gang-raped. Males can be and are trafficked. Males can be and are pimped out against their will.

This sounds like a really terrible idea to me.
Just sitting on a street begging for hours on end, I'd be board senseless.
Maybe that's why so many (not ALL!) homeless people try heavy drinking (or using drugs) so they aren't fully conscious for most of the day.
That's an achievement that 99.9999999999% of the world population would desperately try not to copy, and the few that would try it wouldn't necessarily see the hypocrisy of doing it...

In addition to everything that has been said so far: "0 costs" means travelling at the expense of others. A concept that I highly disapprove of.

I work for a living so has to pay for my life as I know it. I purposely work at a Deli in a grocery store so as to have food for my lunch and dinner free of charge as an employ benefit. i use the bus in the winter to and from work and my bike in the spring, summer and fall so as to save on gas money and get my exercise. I do this so as to be able to save money to and use towards enjoying the benefits of traveling the world and pay for my ski lift ticket at the ski resort I live at.
Why do I want to give up this to understand better the homelessness of other people in a different country more than a 12 hour flight away that would cost me "money I could donate locally" to help the less fortunate (which I do financially and physically anyway via my church) when it would be better to try to understand the mental illness of a lot of these homeless people and why they are becoming that way in each region of the world OR to try and fix the problem politically in the countries that some of these people are coming from as refugees. Please also understand that being homeless and the reasons why varies from city to city and country to country. Being homeless in Baghdad, Boise, or Rome are all for very different reasons. Why not go and donate time and your well earned money(assuming you actually work for a living and save your money) and try to help them via charity by giving them money and food instead of stealing it from them as another "pretend homeless refugee".

The reason it bothers me is that you are actually taking from the homeless. What is given to you will not be given to someone who truly needs it. I understand your desire to empathize with the homeless and will make a slightly different suggestion. Why not make a homeless friend? Surely you go places where you see the same homeless person nearly every day and perhaps even worry when they aren't there? Stop and talk to them and slowly you will get to know them. We met two lovely gentlemen outside our church that way. One was a mentally challenged fellow who just couldn't cope with life in general and the other turned out to be an amazingly talented musician who had spent his life struggling with alcohol but kept up with his music as much as he could and "earned" his money by clearing up the trash in front of the church (it's on a lovely square). They were both kind and gentle and loved to chat. We got them Christmas presents which eventually they came to expect, but the first time it brought tears because they hadn't gotten gifts for years.

So, make a friend and gain some understanding and let the people at your planned destination get the money and food you would be taking away from them.

I wish you luck.

Ah, there are a few contradictions in what you want to do.

First of all, if it is philanthropy you're after, you should dedicate more than just your week of adventure being "homeless" ... probably experience first hand what refugees or stateless people go through. And then if you're touched by the experience, get into a career helping our less fortunate brethren.

Second, your references to YouTube and what you intend to do smack of begpacking. Even if you're doing it in Italy, try another place where that practice is frowned upon and see for yourself if it is really something you want a thrill out of.

Thirdly, I think there is more you can do with the money you have (from savings or work) rather than compete with the homeless in the streets. Donate, put up a foundation, volunteer your time and material wealth, and don't expect anything in return. That is far more noble than what you propose to do.

Good luck on your endeavor. Let us know what you finally decide to do in the end.

I've seen plenty of this kind of thing around the world. Usually the clown pant set trying to sell day camp level bracelets and banging a tambourine with a bowl out trying to get farther down the road on the largesse of people's handouts. I can't imagine the local gendarmerie is going to take well to these shenanigans.

If you're going to do it, do it right, and eat out of dumpsters but feed some other real homeless person while explaining to them that you are basically touring their hardship for yuks.
