Hi,

I am flying out to Australia for 3 months in December, I'm coming with family before they go home after three weeks. They go home just before New Year, whilst on the topic are there any New Year events that anyone would recommend? I'll be situated in Melbourne around this time, I'll be traveling around more by myself after New Year until I head home in March. Like most others I'm traveling to reinvent myself, meet new people, embrace the culture and I'm wondering where the best places are to do all of this? I've yet to come up with a plan of where I want to go etc but I've heard that the best experiences are the ones that have less planning put into them and more taking each day as it comes living in the moment.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ross

I think at least a little planning won't hurt. Otherwise you could easily just waste the time away without leaving Melbourne.

If you are on a self-discovery tour (as opposed to a sightseeing tour), I'd recommend making a list of interesting activities you'd like to try. Obviously the farther out of your comfort zone the better. Then start working through that list to see how you could go about making them happen.

One good option to meet random people is Meetup.com - in a city like Melbourne especially you'll find a bunch of interesting meetups to attend on any given evening. It's a great way to meet local people and get a feel for how people live. If you start exploring smaller towns that won't work so well because the population isn't there to have daily meetups going on.

But yes, also leave some time in your plans for random encounters and serendipitous events.

Sounds like you have a wonderful trip ahead
