I am looking to travel to Mexico city soon for about a week. I am looking for advice from travelers who have been there for some advice. First, what are your recommendations on the best things to do and sites to see in Mexico city. Secondly, what are the best ares to stay in that aren't too touristy but are also safe areas of the city. I will be there for a week, so I need a lot of recommendations for things to do! Thanks guys!

There will be lots of things to do and visit in Mexico City . Here is a list of some of the main places to visit and things to do:

Centro Histórico - Zócalo, National Palace (with amazing murals on the history of Mexico by DiegoRivera - free of charge to go in), Cathedral, Templo Mayor - Aztec ruins. These are all in the same square.
Around the Alameda Park - Bellas Artes, Post Office, Torre Latino, Museum of Folk Art (the VW Beetle covered in 2 million beads by the Huichol tribe is there). Also you can eat at Café de Tacuba and Casa de los Azulejos.

Chapultepec Park - one of the largest in the world, has lakes, museums, forests etc. Visit the Anthropology Museum (amazing), the Castle (great views and history museum), Flying Men who jump off a pole with a rope around them, etc.

Condesa - many travellers stay here in Airbnb or hostels, parks, restaurants and cafes, nice to walk around, dog trainers in the parks, laid back atmosphere

Roma - cafes and restaurants, Casa Lamm Cultural centre, street art...

San Angel - beautiful Colonial area with fine colourful mansions, cobbled streets, squares, craft shops, Bazaar Sabado - on Saturdays, the whole place is an outdoor market where crafts from all over Mexico are sold, painters... restaurants. El Carmen Monastery with real "mummies" in the crypts

Coyoacán - one of the most colourful areas of Mexico City - shops, restaurants, parks, markets, great place to stroll around and soak in the atmosphere, travellers also like to stay here, Frida Kahlo Blue House museum etc... safe area for walking

Xochimilco - in the south of the city where they still have the canals and trajineras (flat-blottomed boats), great place to go

Polanco - Lincoln Park has lots of places to eat, cafés.. Masaryk is the main shopping street with the big name shops.

Teotihuacán Pyramids - a day trip to the impressive Aztec ruins near Mexico City (take a cap or hat as it can be very hot) - there is a restaurant in the caves there - La Gruta

I don't think you will run out of things to do! There are also markets, monuments like El Angel de la Independencia, street food, lucha libre, galleries, loads of really good street art, fiestas and fairs, and the city has 160 museums! The Turibus (open-topped hop-on hop-off) has several routes.

Just let me know if you need any more information....

My opinion is Chapultepec Castle is the best place to see in Mexico as well as to know about Mexico history. This castle is really very impressive and offers amazing views of the city. I also visited Chapultepec Park which is good but I gave vote to the former one. I visited Mexico last year and stayed in a hotel somewhere in Reforma (forget its name) near Chapultepec in Polanco. Here are some other best hotels in the city along with transport options.
