Never been to Roatan; is it a safe place to take long walks?

You shouldn't encounter any problems on Roatan if you're aware and alert to your surroundings. Myself, I prefer the quiet beauty of uncrowded Guanaja island, where many people still leave their doors open, even at night. I was there earlier this month. My friend enjoyed snorkeling the beautiful reefs there. We stayed at a guest house on Guanaja and enjoyed the many hummingbirds that were there. There's only a short road on the island, so most people travel around in boats. It's the primary way of getting around, even from the airport.

Roatan is a great place to take long walks. There is a village at the other end of the island from where I imagine you'll stay. It is very poor, and so I can imagine it would be stupid to walk around being ostentatiously a (relattively) rich person, but the island is pretty mellow and worthwhile.

While Berner likes Guanaja, I prefer Utila. I've been on all the islands. There are lovely walks on Utila as well. Any choice is good. I think you'll like those islands. Have fun.
