Hello All,

Has anyone travelled through Sudan?

I have Three questions?

1. Info on crossing the land border from Egypt to Sudan?

2. Police Registration?

3. Is Sudan expensive, in regards to everyday expenditures?

Any information appreciated.

Many thanks.

I have travelled through sudan twice , 2006and 2011. On these occasions the only way was the ferry from Aswan to wadi halfa, now the road is open to all and should be much quicker . The border crossings involve more paperwork than you can imagine and the change to local number plates for a vehicle .this will be one of the few places in Africa that will need a fixer....unless you are on foot then it will be ok .
You are supposed to register with the local police whenever you stop over in a town , I only did this on one occasion when a hotel insisted and it was quick and easy.
Sudan is not expensive at all there are lots of market stalls for fresh fruit ,veg and bread. Maybe take the lonely planet guide book for cheap but good hotels ........wish I was going again, good luck

Hi David,

Thank you so very much for your detailed response.

Yes, we are driving down via Wadi Haifa. We know the truck will go on a separate barge. I have applied for the Sudanese Letter of Invitation. Getting our Sudanese Visas’ in Aswan, Egypt. 10 weeks today, we will be off! I’m expecting the beaucracy to be as bad as Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan!

Will be using a fixer.

Hello , I think that the Aswan ferry no longer uses the barge for vehicles and so you have to go by road to wadi halfa . I will private message you

Can you let me know if the aswan/wadi verry still operates as I have been told it doesn't as the road is now open . My last visit was 2011 so I'm only going by other travellers posts......david

Hi David, the ferry still runs, we have our bookings. I can’t get my Sudanese Visa in London. I need other visas as well. I would have to send Passorts from Aust to England. Also, we are going to be on the road for Two months, and the visa would expire beforehand! Plus, the Sudanese Letter of Invitation has been requested to sent to Aswan.

Regards,
Kylie
