Hey I've done a couple round the world trips and sometimes just search to see how cheaply it can be done for the fun of it. I probably won't be doing this one for multiple reasons so figured I'd throw it out there for someone who might. If you know a first time international traveler on an extreme budget it's good for a shorter trip and you get Europe and Asia for basically the price of one round trip via North America using budget airlines, no backtracking.

San Francisco, USA -to- Phuket Thailand on China Eastern Airlines for $234 (with possibility of extended layover in Shanghai, China)
Oct 19,20,21

Ground from Phuket, Thailand to Krabi, Thailand

Krabi, Thailand -to- Stockholm, Sweden on Norwegian Airlines for $116
Nov 1,2,8

Stockholm, Sweden -to- San Francisco, USA on WOW Air for $189 (with 2 hour layover in Reykjavik, Iceland)
Nov 9

$547 total for airfare

It's pretty limited by location and timing but it's def the cheapest I've fond. Here's a video I made that basically just elaborates on the info above https://youtu.be/FvRp8xrORzo

P.S. Video is not monetized, I don't work for a travel agency or any of these airlines but I do want them to succeed, thrive and expand (Norwegian at least) so N.America can eventually get some true budget airlines like Ryan Air/Air Asia.

Me either, ironically if you're living in San Fran you probably don't need budget travel

Also check airline routes covered under "fifth freedom rights." There are bargains to be had. For example, AirAsiaX flies from Osaka (KIX) to Honolulu (HNL) for as little as $126; and from HNL to KIX for as low as $131.

What are "fifth freedom rights?" See these links: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedoms_of_the_air#Fifth_freedom

There are other strategies to save money. Also watch for fare sales.

I've definitely been eyeing Air-Asia's HNL connections and trans-pacifc flights, supposedly they are connecting to the west coast (LAX/SFO/etc) be interesting to see if they connect via HNL or an actual non stop trans-pacific.
