I am new to Travellerspoint and I was so excited to begin. I wanted to put all my past travels on the map and all the future ones too.
But on the 6 travels I tried to put on the map, in everyone of them I got stuck at some point not finding the place I had been.
I have read on the forum that since Google maps is a paying service the site is using a "second best" engine.
This second best is, through my experience, really bad, on the border of not beeing usable.
Please do something about it because a site like this without a good mapping has zero value.

Can you give examples? It’s hard for me to respond helpfully without some kind of specifics

Also, if you know a spot near where you want to map, you can search for that, then drag the marker to where you actually want it to go. You can then rename the spot to whatever you want. You’re not locked down to the locations available through the search.

Ok, the drag thing is good to know.

A few exemples:
- the international airport in Mauritius
- El Chalten, the town in Patagonia
- Anahuac National wildlife refuge in Texas
- the island of Praslin in Seychelles (got me a wrong match)
- Playa Giron in Cuba

Can't remember the 6th one I talked about.

Thanks for that.

Definitely all confirmed missing on my end. I'm surprised some of these are missing actually. I'll open a ticket with Mapbox (the company responsible for this particular autocomplete) to report the specifics. Obviously not looking to just fix the missing ones, but it might prompt them to add some more comprehensive location data in there.

Going back to the Google implementation is unfortunately entirely out of the question. I can only use that in combination with Google Maps and that has become cost-prohibitive for a free feature like this.

It is unquestionably the best of these systems out there. It's a difficult problem to solve. I've searched far and wide for alternatives and believe it or not, the current one is pretty much the next-best thing out there. I'm sure it will improve over time as well, as there is plenty of investment going in to Mapbox.

That said, I can also do better at providing other ways of adding locations. ie, make it more obvious that the marker is draggable, or make it so you can just drop a pin to get started.

That will be my main focus in trying to improve on the current state.

This is the page for leaving feedback on missing locations by the way:

I've had more of a look into this and decided that there is a better option after all in the Rome2Rio autocompleter.

It misses address level searches which Mapbox handles for quite a few countries. But it handles all the places you listed above without a problem. I think for our purposes, these are more important. It will also be a LOT faster than Mapbox because I'll populate a base level of places from Travellerspoint data which means any reasonably large locations will be returned virtually instantly. That's probably 60% of the results already sorted without going anywhere else.

Anyway, stay tuned. Hoping to get this sorted today or tomorrow.

Quoting Peter

So another new mapping system? I have just made a start on sorting the issue with zooming into a specific part of a trip on the maps inserted into my blog entries. Would it be wise to hold off until you've made these further changes Peter?

Oh no, not a new mapping system. Just a new geocoder which is only one small part of the puzzle (it’s the part where you type a name to find a location to add to your map). The rest, including the inserting of maps, is in no danger of changing any time soon.
