I would like to spend 6 weeks in a nice, friendly, not crazy expensive beach town while recovering from shoulder replacement surgery. I will be alone and limited in what i can do so modern necessities will be needed. Thanks

Brazil comes to mind though I am not sure if it is considered an expensive destination. Argentina also has a nice set of resort towns with modern amenities but it is what I would consider expensive. Costa Rica which I know is technically in Central America and not South America I think would fit the bill quite nicely. You have a choice of the Caribbean coast with Limon and Puerto Viejo or the Pacific coast with the Guanacaste Province. Playa Flamingo and Tamarindo are towns that have good modern amenities.

Try Taganga Colombia. Cheap beach town. Beautiful water, easy to get to. Stuff to do. Has great scuba too, should that be a thing

The cheapest place would probably be someplace like Playa del Carmen in Mexico (even though that is North America). You can rent a tiny house there for about $15.00/night. There is also Belize (in Central America) but the beaches there aren't as beachy due to the offshore reef, but the official language is English, and it is cheap and friendly. The Peru coast around the Callao port is also very cheap.

Is Playa del Carmen really that cheap these days? It's been going full on touristy for a number of years now. I'm honestly asking. I haven't been thru there for eight years. Placencia, Belize has a nice beach. None of this is A, but there we go.

Well I just looked on VRBO and that was the price I saw. ($15/night). It doesn't have a kitchen -just a mini-fridge. A hostel would be even cheaper but I thought the OP would not really want that. I think Cancun is the much more touristy place, and also Cozumel which has thousands of cruise ships visiting.

The reefs in Placencia are farther away, but the beaches are not that big IMHO although I am not really a beach person so my opinion is not worth that much.

I visited two years ago and at that point Playa Del Carmen was cheaper than Placencia though personally I enjoyed the beach at Placencia more;). But the OP stated they want to be close to modern amenities and I found Placencia to be like a tiny village whereas Playa Del Carmen is a larger city with things like supermarkets and the like.

Where do these people go after their question? I don't get it.

Another good, ACTUAL south american beach town to go to is Joao Pessoa. It's in Brazil. It has all the amenities you'd ever need. It's the farthest east one can go in the Americas. It has great beaches, and the famous beach attire. It's not that expensive (though I found Brazil surprisingly expensive.) And it's fairly mellow as a destination.
