Has anyone done the Trans-Mongolian? And if so, did you do so in the standard trains or one of the tour-type ones (the Golden Eagle is out of our price range but the Tsar's Gold not too bad when you consider all meals on board are included)?

What stops did you make? Any companies you would recommend booking through? Any other comments?

Did do that a very long time ago in January, this train was Chinese run (the Manchurian train was run by the Russians,), the wagons Russian, also the conductor and the restaurant until the Mongolian border, and this train was fairly clean and comfortable, in the restaurant the soups and the bread was good, the meat not eatable.
Going back i had the Manshurian train, less clean and the restaurant was more a smugglers den then a place to eat.
Because weather and visa complications at that time we did not make any stops in Russia.
This might be very diferent today.
Personaly i would use today the RZD website, book the border crossing part on there international part (i presume there is a surcharge), on a random date Irkutsk to Ulan Bator 12600 and 8300 Rubel for 1. and 2. class sleeper compartment, Moskva to Irkutsk betwen 8000 and 12200 Rubel for a 2. class sleeper compartment and 3600 for 3. class open sleeper.
You should book all your train tickets before, some people got stuck in smaler places for weeks.
