I am new to this forum and new to traveling. I have traveled around the U.S., my dream is to visit all 50 states. I would also love to go backpacking through Europe. Anyway, I was just wondering how people got interested in traveling. I am looking forward to hearing the responses!

My parents started me off. When I was a baby (less than a year old) they drove with me from Maryland to Colorado (my father's mother lived in Colorado). We went out on the train at least twice and then we drove out again in 1948 when I was 10. My mother gave us (me and my sister) road maps (which in those days were free from gas stations) and we had to figure out how far it was to the next town and where we could get gas. Then they took us to Europe in 1950. Then I married a Naval officer and we moved 14 times in 20 years. After we both retired, we went down the intercoastal on our boat and spent the winter in Florida and the Bahamas for a couple of years, and we also started cruising on ships. Still traveling at 80

When I was little, we visited relatives all over the USA. It just seemed normal to travel. My father and maternal grandmother loved to travel and often took me along. I thought everyone did until I got to junior high and discovered no one had been to California (this was in rural Ohio). My husband caught the travel bug from me and we've moved all over the country and loved it. When we discovered Europe, we were hooked on that. Fortunately, our kids all like to travel too. They are all grown but still travel with us when they can get off work. We all just want to see what is there . . . :)

Quoting greatgrandmaR

My parents started me off.

PS - I think my mother's parents started her off - I have postcards that my grandfather wrote from places like Hatteras and Hawaii in the early 1900s. And my dad's parents immigrated from Germany to Colorado.

I think I caught the travel bug when I was 17. As I explain in the intro to my blog, I was lucky enough to be able to take part in a camping trip arranged by my UK school – to Canada! It meant scraping together every penny I could from my Saturday job, plus what I could beg from my parents, but the effort was worthwhile, and looking back I think it was this trip that shaped my love of travel. In those days (early seventies) for a teenager from my background to have the opportunity to see Niagara Falls and the wilds of the Algonquin Park and (on our way home) enjoy a day in New York City, was just incredible.

I definitely will have to give my parents credit for my love of travelling. From a very tender age, I travelled a lot with my family. My father's job made him move and travel a lot so I guess it was just something we had to get used to and love eventually. I have travelled to Florida and New York in the State; Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in the UAE; England and Scotland in Europe and quite a number of places in Africa. I am currently in Nigeria and my time here has been awesome. My family is based here so it wasn't a hassle for me getting around. I decided I'll be staying in a hotel for the duration of my stay here and since I had planned a surprise visit, I had to use -snip- to get my accommodation and using this service has been one of the highlights of my stay here. I was able to find a really nice and affordable hotel with discounted rates using this site.

Me too, parents got me into it, maybe it's genetic since my family has a lot of travellers and people moving to other countries. I didn't even consider travelling whithin Europe as real travels when I was little, the USA trip when I was 6, that was real travelling the rest where shopping trips

Like others, my parents took me on trips as a child. But the bug truly took hold when I, dissatisfied with my 20 year old life, packed a VW Beetle and drove from Mass. to Albuquerque to live with my uncle. The feeling of being totally free, between two places, was exhilarating. I am still happiest when in-between places, en route to anywhere.

The parent thing. By the time I was 12, my parents had taken me to Hawaii like 3 times, Grand Cayman Island, ABC Islands and St Lucia, British Columbia 3 or 4 times, Disneyland AND Disney World in Florida, Yellowstone Park, most of the states of Idaho and Washington and Oregon. Since then.....every where else.
