Hello all

Myself and my partner will be travelling across the states throughout November and aim to visit Mt. Rushmore sometime around the 10th/11th. Earlier in the year we were communicating with a small family run tour company, however recent attempts at communication have not been responded to. We don't necessarily want a tour and would be just as happy with transport for a return trip.

My question is: Can anyone recommend either a tour guide in Rapid City, or just simply an affordable means to visit Mt. Rushmore without access to our own vehicle?

Thanks!

Steve

Hi Steve. We drove ourselves and that's the easy way. If you check the Rapid City, SD Tourist Office web site, they have some options. Most of the transportation options are at Click here for Rapid City SD Tourist Office transportation options

I can't recommend any of them since I haven't used them; however, the city tourist office is advertising them so I would think they are all okay. You might contact a few of them and see what they offer. If you just want a return trip, tell them that.

If all else fails, try Lyft or Uber.

You are going to Mt Rushmore in November? There isn't a great deal open at that time of the year. I would also not even guarantee you being able to get up that mountain road to see Mt Rushmore at that time of the year. The snow in the mountains gets deep and icy.

Oops. I didn't catch that. She's right. Weather can be a real problem in November. You might be lucky, but you might not. The Dakotas are famous for their fierce winter weather. Even if you can arrange transportation, you might want to have a backup plan.

Hmm, thanks for the advice. We originally planned to book all our greyhound buses in advance to save money, however if the weather turns out a problem it might be best if we head further south from Chicago as we move west, avoiding SD all together. I hope that isn't the case though as SD and Wyoming are probably the two states I'm most excited to visit.

I'll check that website out now - cheers!

You really want to do the Black Hills in the summer. There is so much to do there. I would stay away from early August when Stugis is going on though.

It is not just seeing the presidents. There are things like Bear Country, where you get to drive through a bunch of black bears. Or Reptile Garden, I am not a big reptile person normally, but this is fun. Or one of my favorites in Keystone is the stupid slide. You go up the mountain on a ski lift, have lunch, and slide down the mountain on the way down...we had to go back up for a second turn. Those are but a few things there.
