Hi Everyone,

I'm aiming to go to travelling early next year for a fairly long time (over a year), and have come stuck choosing the right travel pack/day pack combo. I'll be visiting regions which are cold and hot, so need to pack for both.

Because I'll be trekking and camping, I want to pick a relatively comfortable main bag. Was thinking along the lines of an Osprey Kestrel 48, which is comfortable and sturdy enough for long hikes and not too big. I also want a day pack which fits the bill for regular city walks and also shorter 1-2 day hikes where I have a choice of crashing indoors or camping a day or two. Would an Osprey Escapist 25 be overkill? My logic is that on those days when I can get away with a smaller day pack, I'd leave the kestrel at the hostel/hotel and rely on the smaller pack.

I've checked the dimensions of each backpack, and reckon I could fit the Escapist in the Kestrel and not take up too much space, but I'd have to test it out to be sure. I know most people get a compressible pack which hardly takes up any room, but I'd be taking some electronics so would prefer the structure of the Escapist. Has anyone successfully fit one of the smaller structured bags into a larger pack without taking up too much room? If it's flat against the side, it should fit, but then again, it may take up too much real estate in there. Any thoughts?
