Hi, I am travelling to New Orleans in February and am looking for suggestions for trips out of town. Any tips?

Have you checked the official New Orleans Office of Tourism? It's a good source of information for the city if not the surroundings. Click here for the New Orleans Official Tourist Office

For the greater New Orleans area, check the Louisiana Tourist Information Office and scroll down to the New Orleans area and click on that. You can check other places in the state too. Click here for the Official Louisiana Tourist Office

You said you are going in February but didn't mention how long you are staying. Will you have a car or are you using public transportation? Mardi Gras isn't until March 5 and I don't know how far in advance they start the festivities but if you could stay for that, it is a major event in New Orleans.

Have fun.

THere are tours that are run out to the mansions along the river, and out to the swamps (air boat trips). A boat trip that they did run was at one time was out to Chalmette (Battle of New Orleans) - that is a NPS site and worthwhile - it is 9 or 10 miles east of New Orleans by road. If you have your own transportation, you could go out to Morgan City (85 miles - there's a carillon in a park there and you can also tour Mr. Charlie which is a real oil rig. Also you can go across Lake Ponchatrain (35 miles) and on the Tchefuncte River there is a Lake Ponchatrain Maritime Museum. Baton Rouge, the state capitol is only about 80 miles from New Orleans.

Check out safety tips on New Orleans. This city is in the top 5 most dangerous cities for the US. There are places you DO NOT want to go at night.

We drove out to visit Laura and Oak Alley plantations one day but if you do not have a car or want to rent one for a day, there are bound to be tours.

If you are looking for some fun swamps to explore, I recommend making sure that the swamp tour doesn't feed the wildlife. I would personally go with a kayak tour as they don't use motors either. As popular as the Honey Island Swamp is, I think the Maurepas swamp is prettier and less filled with trash.

A slight word of warning: Beware of "scenic" drives south of New Orleans.

My atlas suggested a (very long) scenic drive south on route 23 to the tip of the delta. It was a long, very bland and at times depressing stretch of road. We loved Louisiana, however this was not the spot.
