Travel Forums System Talk Messaging system

I recently posted a query about subscribers not getting email alerts, and now I think I may have found another glitch. I was looking at my sent messages and noticed that the last three I sent have not been read. In the case of the most recent, sent yesterday, that isn't surprising, but the previous two were sent in October - one in reply to a specific question (so you would think the other member would be looking out for a message from me) and the other to a very active member who I know has been on the site a lot recently because I've seen her blog entries. Of course it's possible that no one particularly wants to talk to me , but it surprised me that they'd not even read the messages! Could there also be a glitch with alerts for messages? Has anyone else got that problem?

Hi ToonSarah,
Yeah, glitches...I'm lost too and confused like you.
Well, I can't read or send message because I never received any email verification that I need to click via my email account to start about it.

I get messages from you when you make a comment on a blog, and on my blogs, I get TWO copies of the same message.

I do too. I've learned to only open one of them. They are two different kinds of message relating to the same thing. At least it means I don't miss them.

Hi Sarah, the problem there is that we send out the messages in emails.

When people read their emails, it includes the message but it can't reliably send back data saying that it's done that.

The fix is to not include messages in the emails. But then I know a lot of people like getting the private messages included in the emails, so I find that a tough call to make.

Alternatively, they might not be getting the notification email at all for some reason and actually not be reading the messages because they have no idea they're there. I'm chasing up your query about the blog subscription notifications not going out. Maybe there's a bug and it's tied to both of these situations

People can also opt to turn off email notifications for private messages. Before the latest header redesign, the header would give a clear indication when there were unread private messages; now there's no such notification, so it's really easy to just forget to ever open the private message center.

Yes that sounds like it could be at the root of this. If someone is on the website regularly but not even realising that they have a message, of course they won’t read it! Peter, is there anything that could be done to make it more obvious, like adding ‘You have a new message from xxx’ to the notifications drop down?

Yep, sounds like a good idea. I've done this now. It's now part of the normal notifications system and I've opted everyone in by default (you can opt out of it through the notification preferences).

It actually also shows on the home page when you have "x new messages" but this is much harder to miss.

Thanks Peter :) I very rarely go to the home page as I have my control panel set as one of my browser home page tabs
