I'm looking for a travel destination for the first weeks of January, in Europe.
Last year I went to Portugal in this time of the year and I really enjoyed it. I am looking for a country/place with similar temperatures, safety, cheapness, and natural and cultural beauty. Quite a list of requirements, I know, so it doesn't have to be exactly the same. I'm a 20-year-old girl if that makes any difference concerning safety.

I hope you guys can help me.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Jana.

I've looked for the same combination, it's a difficult one. Most places are a bit too cold, or they're less interesting (like the Canaries), or expensive (like Italy).

Would Malta be warm enough for you? Or would Gibraltar interest you? Not particularly cheap but fascinating (to me).

How about Spain? In my experience it's a bit more expensive than Portugal but is similar in many other respects. Southern Spain (Andalucia) is interesting for it's Moorish influence. I have a photo/travel blog that includes our trips to Portugal and Spain if you are interested.

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]

1) Morocco: safe, warm, very cheap, buckets of cultural beauty
2) Malta: agree all as per above post. It is possible to do it on the cheap (public transport, cheaper eateries, etc)
3) Cyprus: all same comments as on Malta

I agree about Morocco, apart from the fact that it's not in Europe

I don't find Italy too expensive if you stay away from the big cities and hot spots, such as Venice. It's also not especially warm in the north at least, but further south could be a good option. How about Palermo? Or Lecce?

Spain and Greece come to mind (lots of options there)
I don't think the Canaries are less interesting, all depends what you're into
And Morocco isn't too far off though it's not Europe
Croatia might also be something to look into

I haven't tried any of these during the winter, but my guess at a list would be Greece, Turkey, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica in Europe but I think Morocco would be my No1.
I'm not sure how cheap Sicily, Corsica or Sardinia would be.
Similarly, I know that 'out of season' many Greek towns pretty much close down tourist-wise, so I don't know how easy it is to get accommodation etc.
I don't think Croatia is very warm in December and I'd do a lot of research into average temps in all these countries before committing to the cost of the flight to any one of them.

I think Sardinia, Corsica, Turkey all pretty much close down for Winter as they're too cold for tourists. I think that's the case for much of the Northern Med apart from the Spanish costas, which tend to be mild like Portgual.

I didn't suggest Morocco due to the hassle factor for a 20-year-old girl. All of the Southern Med (Egypt, Tunisia) is dodgy on this front too. In my opinion - your tolerance for hassle may vary.

Maderia may be worth a look.

Thank you for all your tips!
I'm now thinking about Malta. But I will be going for 3 weeks, and even though I want to spend half of that volunteering on a farm, I don't know if Malta is big enough for such a long time?
Otherwise I'll look into Spain. Or maybe Crete, if that is big enough? Morocco I would like to visit one day but I'll want more than 1,5 weeks for that.
