When uploading photo's and editing their details I always carefully point them to the exact location using the map.
However, I find that there is no way to look up the location of any photo apart from 'My Photos'. Neither can I look up the location of any photo of another traveller. That way, what's th use of specifying an exact location?

Great question. I did notice when you go to the Featured Photos section that if you scroll down under the photo on the left, it lists the location. Perhaps that is the reasoning for location. Some of them don't get too specific though, i.e. China as a location or USA. That is a lot of territory and you have no idea where in these large countries the photo was taken. Many don't have titles so that doesn't help either.

Why do we have to be specific about the location? I'm another one who tries to put each photo in place on the map and it takes a lot of time.

It would be nice if we could zoom into the location on everyone's maps like we do on our own. For instance, one of the Featured Photos was listed as "Powell Point" and the location as Bumble Bee, AZ. I got my Google map out and found Bumble Bee, Arizona and discovered Powell Point is miles north of it, actually much nearer Flagstaff than Bumble Bee. So in this case, the location posted is actually misleading and if you wanted to visit the place, you would end up in the wrong part of Arizona.

I find that when I locate things exactly on the map at lesser known locations, it just says USA, but the pointer is in the correct place.

When I am trying to place photos in a narrative, it helps to have them more precisely located. So if I have 1000 photos of South Carolina and I want to find one that was taken in Frogmore, I can click on the Location at the top of the 1000 photos and Frogmore will come up after Beaumont and Charleston, but before Myrtle Beach and Georgetown.

Well you’re quite right that it is barely used at the moment. I was playing with adding it to the travel maps as an overlay a few weeks ago and thought it turned out reasonably well. I’d rather focus on getting tips working for now though so it went back to the back burner.

I’d definitely like to make it so we can browse more photos through maps as well as use that data in search.

It’s only a matter of time. Feel free to keep bugging me on it so I know it’s important to you all though 😀
