Hey guys!

So I booked a car with 0 self-risk insurance. however, I did not get the SAAP insurance when I made the reservation and now I am having doubts.
Shall I purchase it? I am traveling in April and I am not certain if it will be necessary or not.

Thank you for the help! :)

It's totally up to you. There are so many volcanoes that can erupt anytime in Iceland and in case any of them erupts, the cars you rented may get damages, but normally you don't get so much damages from sand or ash if you stick to main tourists attractions. If you can pay for the damage in case it happens, you certainly don't need SAAP but if you cannot, I'd recommend to get one.

When I went to Iceland, we didn't buy SAAP but bought GP (Gravel Protection) as the risk seemed higher.
You should be able to purchase insurance upon arrival.

It is true that sand or ash storms can happen any time but usually its "season" is from April to September.

Wind in Iceland can be pretty tough and gravels can literally fly all over the place. If I were you, I'd add it...I don't want to imagine how much paintwork would cost in Iceland....

By the way, no deductible? I tried to get that kind of insurance for my rental car but I couldn't find any company. what kind of coverage did you get? All risk?

I suppose it depends how your travel insurance works. I didn't purchase any extra rental insurance because my travel insurance covered up to AU$3000 damage. I figured it would be enough but maybe I under estimated how much such damage would cost Despite driving the west fjords we didn't end up putting the insurance to work, though the car we got was pretty banged up so maybe we might have damaged it but you couldn't tell it apart from the previous damage.

I rented a car last September, and we did take the SAAP insurance, fortunately! As we faced strong winds while traveling on the sand beaches and you have a big chance or ruin your car while this happens.
Finaly nothing happenned to the car, but we were glad we were covered, otherwise I don't think we could have faced the cost for that kind of damages.
We did not find any rental with no excess insurance! Is that a new thing? We are looking to visit again next summer (now with our child) and would definetely take this option rather than an insurance with excess.

Hey guys!

Thank you all for your help! I will definitely get it then, I really don't want to risk it, even if the chances are low.

About the no excess insurance, I booked with a company that offers every insurance included in the price, except for the SAAP (that is why I started having doubts about it lol)

And additionally, you can get something called Liability Waiver, which reduces the excess to 0.

The company is called -snip-

Thanks again, guys! And Merry Christmas! :)

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]
