Hey! I am 29 and looking to travel to New Zealand alone next year but I am worried I am going To be way older then anyone else. I don’t want to be stuck in hostels full of 18 year olds. Can anyone give me any advice about accommodation?

Thank you :)

29?! Nah! There's a real mix of travellers in NZ and all ages stay in hostels, old and young. Don't worry about your age - you'll be surprised how many younger travellers and how many older travellers will pass the time with you. Enjoy New Zealand - many travellers place it near the top of their destinations.

Hey, I'm 70 and a life member of Hostelling International USA. You're unlikely to be way older than anyone else in a hostel.

Choose any clean, comfortable accommodation to suit your budget. On arrival in New Zealand visit any of the i-SITE tourist information centers nationwide. I found them helpful in arranging transportation, accommodations, etc.

Expect most YHA hostels to have ~50% backpackers of 21-25 y.o. Another 25% will be 26-31 y.o., maybe 10% will be 18-21, with the remainder being 32+ (with 70+ being not at all unusual), and the occasional family with children also mixed in.

At VIP e.a. hostels that have more of a party reputation, the age mix will skew heavily to the younger side, but even there I don't think you'd stand out at 29. Still, given that this is a concern to you, that really should be your main criteria for choosing hostels: avoid party hostels, and you'll be absolutely fine.

(Note: all statistics made up on the spot, and solely based on personal experience from several trips to NZ during the last decade and a half - but all the same it should be relatively accurate.)

I am 30 year old and I do like to travel alone, I can say that it can be the best of the experience one can get. The forum Solo travel to Bali helped me lot in motivating me for this.

[ Edit: Fixing link - note, this is just a link to another TP thread, so not promotional ]

I am 25 years old and I travel solo to Canada and many more countries. Travel blogging website helps me a lot for grabbing information about that particular area. So, you just don't worry IzzieB and go through some travel blog websites. It may definitely help you.

Exactly the same boat! I am currently 27, will be 28 when I head over and was concerned about the ages of other travelers! I will be going out there alone too, nice to know I'm not the only one! Lol
