We are always recommended to travel light. 'Light' would literally mean that you should only carry those amenities that are really important to you and those that you might find difficulty in looking for once you are out to travel.

Apart from this, if you are going for a long vacation then a travel insurance is highly recommended. This is going to be helpful in terms of the monetary compensation you will receive during certain unavoidable situations. We are primarily talking about the medical expenses.

Other documents including Passport and photocopies of the same would come handy.

Hope this has been helpful to you.

Hi Lisa,

I really liked that you recommended good things like travel insurance, passport, and Xerox. I want to recommend one more thing that is quite essential if you are moving with your family.
Each and every member should have its photograph including photos of all family members. It really helps you when you are in trouble.

Hello there,

I agree. Individual photographs will help us when we are travelling with our Family. Thanks for reminding me on that :)

I just store things like copy passport, photos, bank id's, insurances etc, basically anything that can be digitally stored in an online drive, where it seems to me to be much safer than carrying it around with you. I can access it from any embassy, police station, bank or hospital if need be. Or from my phone as long as I have access to that. Not just when travelling, but always. Other than passport, money (cards) and tickets, I never have carry on luggage.

Wow that's travelling light. No spare underpants or socks?

Luggage: yes, carry on: no. World tour with 4 pants, 2 sweats, 5 t's, 10 boxers, 2 swim trunks and 2 sock pairs. 1 towel, tooth brush + paste I took from hotel, comb, razor and contact lenses. And spare shoe strings. Thats about it. Oh , and the shoes in wearing.

10 boxers? Crikey. You could halve that number (or even more than halve) just by washing them and drip-drying overnight (shampoo, soap, shower gel...all abs good enough). I wouldn't dream of packing 10 pairs of knickers! :-)

Dude, where do you get these numbers? I do 5 speedos, 1 swim trunk and 5 to 6 sock pairs. Why do you need "2" swim trunks?

We simply take what we use in a week at home. I actually always carry our passports and credit cards. Generally, if you don't use it at home, you won't use it on vacation. Every week we do a laundry which gives us a bit of a rest. It takes a couple hours and then we sightsee locally that day. If you like to take pictures, add a camera . . . something else I usually carry all the time.

I only wear socks in ' winter' countries like N. America and Europe and will buy more if and when needed. I would not be caught dead in a speedy, my friends would die laughing if they saw me in one, it is simply faux pas in Europe. And boxers is the one thing I wear clean every day, sometimes twice a day. I dont always have the opportunity to wash and I never want to tun out of clean ones. They take little room, so they are my indulgence. :)
