I could never travel overseas like this. I have no problem with a carry on bag and a check in bag. I like changing my clothes when needed. In the carry on bag I have a change of clothes, shaving kit with toothpaste. I have a change of clothes, pants (meaning trousers,) shirt, and underwear. There were times I was glad to have these items with me when flights ended up with long delays or even diverted to other airports. I keep my computer in my check in bag. Also books to read and sometimes some snacks. (Will look into some sort of a reader like a Kindle Reader to save room. But not too hot with reading novels off a screen.)
In my check in bag I have spare shoes. (Big feet, not cheap and sometimes not easy to find a replacement overseas.) Spare clothes with extra underwear and socks. Multi-tool like a Leatherman but cheaper. (You never know when you have to fix something or adjust something.) A knife for cutting pastry and making sandwiches. Needle and thread for emergency repairs. Spare hat or two. An extra shirt or two. (In warm locations you can go through a couple shirts in a day when walking in the heat.) Walk shorts for warm locations. Larger size containers of sun block for sunny locations. Larger size can of shaving cream. Other odds and ends. (For winter departures or returns I have a light jacket and something warm to use if I have to walk in snow or cold. Maybe gloves too. (When my train comes into my hometown late at night there is no taxi available. Only a half hour walk anyway. I won't wake people in the middle of the night to cadge a ride off of them.)
I am too cheap to buy stuff to wear on the road and then just throw it away. I am an "in between size" especially for trousers. Off the rack they are either too tight or too loose, so what I have is tailored to fit. Also sometimes with a hidden pockets. Trousers have reinforced seat areas, leg lengths that I prefer, etc.
Take with you what you want. No cost to me for long distance flights if I have a check in bag so I bring one. For longer stays overseas I may include some additional foods like peanut butter. Don't laugh!!! I have overseas friends that never leave home without their marmite - vegimite spreads!! (I know I can get snacks and other foods overseas but not always my favorites and not at cheap prices.)
A check in bag gives me a little room for junk I buy overseas and take home.
Lots of good hints in above posts. I keep a copy of my flight itinerary in email form that I can refer to. I do make a reduced copy that I stuff in my passport pouch for a quick look when needed. A pen or two to use in filling out customs - immigration forms. Wet-wipes for cleaning hands off and cleaning tray off that's on the seat back. (Read up on unsanitary seat back trays!!!)

On the plane a sleep mask and ear plugs can be helpful for sleeping. I don't take pills to make me sleep, I prefer to have part of my brain alert for emergencies that may come up.
Best thing to bring is a sense of humor an patience! Not everything goes as planned. When I have a delay or other long wait for something I will pull out my book and read.
For long flights get up and move a bout to prevent blood clots!

It's unwise to keep valuables (such as electronics, jewelry and money) in check-in bags. They are liable to be stolen. Some airports are notorious for thievery:

Can you hear me banging my head on my table?? Bang! Bang! Bang!
Yeah, I had a typo "brain fart" and meant to say CARRY ON BAG. (I can lock my carry on bag too!)
I never leave a computer in a check in bag. (Also I always password protect it. And for any bank accounts or other important stuff none of the passwords are set in memory.) If someone is going to steal it I want them to do some work to have access to it!
Good catch.
Happy New Year.

You haven't seen a Kindle for a while. They do everything a smart phone does only with a bigger screen. The larger print is the selling point for me, including larger print on the web and email. When your eyes start to age, you'll understand. I don't carry mine around all the time, but I do like it on the plane and in the evenings. It also keeps me from cluttering my phone with a couple hundred books. My phone is linked to my Kindle so I can pull up a book if I need to and then remove it later. Good for unexpected waits.
I don't have a "tablet" because a Kindle is a tablet. It's just called something different.

Looks like I have been out of loop with Kindle developments. So you can browse the web, listen to music and watch videos just like a computer?

I just store things like copy passport, photos, bank id's, insurances etc, basically anything that can be digitally stored in an online drive, where it seems to me to be much safer than carrying it around with you. I can access it from any embassy, police station, bank or hospital if need be. Or from my phone as long as I have access to that. Not just when travelling, but always. Other than passport, money (cards) and tickets, I never have carry on luggage.
Glad to read your idea. I think this is the perfect option for keeping our documents digitally. Thanks for sharing your idea.

On a long flight I kind of like to have a toothbrush and toothpaste with me in my carry on bag. Many of my flights can exceed 24 hours flying and long layovers at airports. And for traveling without any luggage - I do understand that some people change their underwear and brush their teeth less often than other people.
For me, digital storage is a back up for my paper copies.
