Fill out your profile. With more information someone can help you easier.

If you are coming from a foreign country this is NOT a good time to visit! Right now the whole world has travel bans and some countries require mandatory home quarantine.

In the meantime buy or borrow a travel guide for California.

Only you know where you are starting from. Only you know if you need a visa or just a train ticket. Only you know how long and what part of California you intend to visit.

Good luck.

YOu should not visit anywhere in the US from another country for about a year. So don't consider any trips here until 2021

Wow. I've not seen timescales like that stated. Is that your own interpretation or official advice? Here our prime minister is talking about 12 weeks, and the scientists are talking in more detail about switching social distancing off and on as needed.

It is not official, but I wanted to make a strong statement. It is what I think of as worst case.

My rational - In China the epidemic lasted about 4 months (16 weeks) - that we know of. They ran out of health care workers and had to import more of them. We don't really have that option, both because of our different type of government and because the infection there was concentrated and ours is more dispersed. What we (US and Australia and others) are doing is shutting down interpersonal contact and this is going to "flatten the curve". When you flatten a curve you don't have the great number of deaths at the peak of the curve, but the curve spreads out over a longer period of time. So IF we are successful at flattening the curve the epidemic will last at least 8 months.

I don't really know that we will be successful, and if we are only partially successful, my opinion is that it will take longer. And I think it will take MUCH longer than the officials are saying.

I doubt if this virus will last that long GreatGrandma, since there is at least one vaccine in clinical trials and being fast tracked but right now almost everything in California is closed, even Yosemite park just closed. Only essential services are open and it took me 3 days to get a loaf of bread from the store, they were all out of everything, same for dairy products (milk, butter, ice cream, etc.).

Anyway OP, you need to fill out your profile and either buy a guidebook like #1 suggested or provide a lot more info like when and where are you visiting, will you have a car or be using public transport, budget per night for lodging, type of lodging (camping, motels, hotels, etc.) and what you want to see (be as specific as possible).

I think you are overly optimistic. A vaccine will take at least a year. Closing everything will reduce the infection rate but won't make the time line shorter - It isn't going to be like the regular flu which abates in the summer.
