Well I've not lived in any other countries and I've managed to get a feel for them.

I would point to Borisborough's remarks - Kiwis tend to view themselves as a society and one bad guy's actions reflect on them collectively. Whereas the USA seems to be much more about individual independence - perhaps that's an unfair assessment.

We're more than one negative statistic so could you quit throwing that one around, please? It's not helpful.

Would you prefer stats about school shootings or percentage of the population in prison? From here it appears to be a troubled country, and warning young travellers about personal safety seems justified.

There are 77 million total visitors to the US per year, yet on average there are only 77 tourists killed per year. Further, most homicides in the US are not random. 90% of homicide victims are killed by someone they know, usually gang violence or family problems.
