We are travelling internally in Canada and arriving in Toronto to visit the falls. We will be staying in Niagara by the Lake and spending the next day at the falls. We have booked a restaurant for the evening meal on the US side.
Can anybody advise if we need to carry visa or permission paperwork to travel across the border at the falls to reach the restaurant?
Thanks

You don't give your citizenship, which is pretty much essential when asking about travel document requirements.

If you are a US citizen you need proof of that fact.

If you aren't a US citizen you almost certainly need an ESTA or visa to enter the US. You don't need to carry a copy of the ESTA but obviously need your passport.

Whether you are or aren't a Canadian citizen this official page tells you what you need to re-enter Canada:

You have UK citizenship so you'll need an ESTA to enter the US and your passport when you visit. ESTA data is stored on the system so it shows up when the passport is scanned. ESTAs last for 2 years so if you haven't already got one I'd advise you to get one asap. Here's the official website:

The link in my first post tells you what you'll need to re-enter Canada. As I assume you have (or will have) an eTA you just need your passport because the eTA data is on the system.

The Canada/US border is the same as any other border between two countries. Other than in a very few places (e.g. the Schengen Area and NI/Republic of Ireland) you can't just nip back and forth without formalities. :-)
