Dear travellers point community,

Is South East Asia ok to visit as a vegan?

The countries I have short listed are:

Sri Lanka
Thailand
Vietnam
Singapore
Indonesia - Bali
Borneo (orangutans)
New Zealand
Myanmar
Laos

Does anyone know of any difficulties I would have in those countries?

Vegan is a bit difficult whereas Vegetarian would be easy in S.E.Asia.

Like in most 3rd world countries, the people really can't understand why anyone would miss out on any type of food voluntarily (religion reasons aside), but will do anything they can to help.

Most places have a vegetarian option but less so for veganism, however there are some Vegan restaurants in Thailand (particularly in Chiang Mai) and a number of YouTubers who vlog about being vegan in s.e.asia.

Have a search...

I just did a search on "vegan restaurants in SE Asia" and came up with lots of information. You may have to do a little planning before you leave, but it certainly looks like you can do it. Try the search and see what you find.

You can also try www.happycow.com and see what they offer in Asia. It's a great web site for Europe and I know they do cover at least parts of Asia.

Good luck.

It will be a little bit difficult for you but it is o.k as you'll be able to find vegetarian restaurants in each city you are going to visit
Wish you all the best during your tours:)

This suggests it is, but you'll need to do some research on the subject before going ;

New Zealand should be fine and Singapore will have some options but for other Asian countries you might struggle. The concept of vegan eating doesn't really exist in Asia and for most of Asia vegetarian food is defined as no actual meat in a dish, but the dish could still contain things like fish sauce, shrimp paste or bone broth. So even if you did ask if this dish is vegetarian they might consider it vegetarian but you might not. If you are really determined to stick to your vegan diet then maybe your safest option is to go to the markets to buy fresh fruits and vegetables to either cook for yourself or eat as is.
