I had been told by my travel agent that one day really isn't enough time to really enjoy beauty of Halong bay.
What do you think?

Definitely, one day isn't enough to explore Halong Bay. It's perfect to spend 3 days (2 nights) in Halong, including 1 night on cruise. Halong itself has numerous landscapes to discover. If you're not constraint in time, combine your itinerary with nearby attractions like Cat Ba island or Lan Ha Bay.
Hope you enjoy your trip in Vietnam!!

Of course, Halong offers many things to do beyond one day. It takes you at least 3 days to enjoy the beauty there.
You should spend one night on cruise and one night in the central city near the beach. You can combine your trip with nearby regions like Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay. All these places are natural masterpieces to unwind in the summer.

Personally, Halong is quite easy to travel. It means that you can spend 1 day or 2 days traveling to Halong Bay depending on your itinerary. In fact, for 1 day, you still have the chance to admire the beauty of Halong Bay by cruise. But if your time does not limit, you should visit Halong 2 days and spend 1 night on a cruise to admire the whole beauty of Halong Bay.
