Hi everyone, I am planning a trip Mid April to AUS, starting Sydney and then planning to make my way up the east coast to Byron/ Brisbane and then onto to Cains.

I have about 18 days in total to play with and just want to ensure I utilise them in the best way, so need some top tips and useful guidance to help me sort my very last minute trip!

I was intending to join a tour group (any recommendations, please send across) but was going to do this from brisbane to cains and cover Noosa, fraser island, whitsunday's and the reef!

Some tours involve overnight train/ coach others fly from Brisbane to airlie - undecided as don't want to loose travel time and my job in the UK, all I do is travel! Driving I do not want to do.

And then do Sydney to Brisbane on my own....to avoid being restricted the whole duration of my trip with a group albeit it could work out better?? I'd like to do a few days in Sydney, visit the blue mountains, hunter valley and then open to suggestions between there and Brisbane. Also want to do Australia Zoo! Need some tips on best routes to take and how to dit, plane or train or coach? Would like to manage costs as best a si can but don't want to be a bus for long hours each time.

But I could do with some advice on this trip and the best course of route/ travel to take. In an ideal world I would just stop off/ stay overnight and move on but these places are quite far from each other! Is it better to fly and if so, what routes to achieve the above?? Or get the coach between sydney and Brisbane and then get off and stay in these places for a few days to break it up ?

I am travelling on my own too so am cautious of travelling safe and planning the best route.

I'd like to get this booked asap but hesitant on getting it wrong so could do with some good tips and travel advice, I really want to ensure I get it right - open to hearing alternatives suggestions as well! Could I do hunter valley from Sydney? Also would Byron bay be a possibility at any point do you think? I have a friend in coff's harbour but I suppose with time limited that's a no no? And same with port maqueris? Definitely don't want to feel like I've just been ona coach for most of it!

It's all last minute and just over 4 weeks to go, here's to spontaneity!

Thanks in advance :)

I'm not a fan of organised tours. They can be great but can also be hell sometimes, depending on the organisation, leader and the other customers.
As it's an English speaking country where things are organised in a way you understand, you wouldn't have any problems doing it yourself (and probably saving money at the same time).
Have a look on https://www.seat61.com/ or just look at the Aussie rail and coach web-sites.
Grab a copy of 'Rough Guide' or 'Lonely Planet' and have fun.

I agree with Andrew about organised tours. We did a similar trip but started in Sydney and took in all the destinations you mention except Fraser Island.
The distances are huge, we travelled by coach with Country Link and could basically get on or off wherever.
The coaches were never full always clean and comfortable.
We found that train travel tended to leave with a long bus or taxi ride from the station as the train runs up the coast but taking the shortest route.
We travelled as couple but met lots of friendly and helpful travellers of all ages.
Hope you enjoy!
