I have about ten days at the end of August I plan to spend in Spain, a country I know reasonably well. I'm tempted to drive through a part I've never visited, from Salamanca to Leon and perhaps Oviedo, then west to Santiago de Compostela. I don't mind the heat particularly, especially when it's dry, but I don't want to be baked absolutely, especially overnight; I also wondered how crowded the cities and tourists sites were at that time of year. Can anyone advise?

The interior of the Iberian peninsular is like a furnace in mid-summer, air conditioning struggles to cope and the streets become deserted during the four hour afternoon siesta, even then there is no respite from the intense heat.

Some years ago I had the misfortune to miss my rail connection in Cordoba and had to sweat it out for several long hours at the railway station awaiting the next train south to Algeciras, when it arrived around midnight the heat was still oppressive, the sun's disappearance made little difference to the ambient temperature, but fortunately when I boarded the train and found my seat the air con wafted some cooler air in my direction and I was able to drift off to sleep for a few hours.

If you are planning to hire a car for your intended journey make sure the air con is blowing ice-cold air, if not reject it, alternatively insist that the refrigerant level is repressurized before setting off.

It will be hot, very hot by MN standards for summer. In addition the humidity can be very high. There is a reason why a lot Spain closed from 2 - 4 or 5 in the afternoon and nightlife does not get rolling until 10 or 11 at night. But if that is you only choice, then go and live with it.

MN?

Likely Minnesota, assuming oblak is from the US.

There is a Myriad attraction in the Spanish mainland and Islands. The mainland is augmented with a beautiful architecture such as Barcelona. Discover the Moorish architecture in Granada Cordoba, and Toledo.
