When u travel on your own, it's important to have few necessary(in my opinion) things. For me its some medicines, power bank, a map(printed or offline), local sim card with internet and of course cash.

local sim card with internet

Most accommodation has wifi that will serve most travellers' needs. So buying a local sim card sounds like a bit of a waste of money to me.

The only benefit is filling some idle time in transit with Facebook or Travellerspoint, but it's as easy to play some music or look at the scenery and get a break from the screen time.

Google Maps lets you download Offline Areas. You can do this from home and most areas are now good for over a year. (Some areas expire earlier due to licencing issues with Google's partners I believe.)

It doesn't yet support live route planning whilst offline but you have the maps and GPS works perfectly offline to locate you.

One of the things I do before travelling is download offline areas for where I'm going.

Thanks, Payleigh to ask about your first trip, these answers will help me more in my journey too.

Yeah, Google Maps is almost like cheating, these days. It's just too damned convenient. I used it on the last trip and even offline, I could find a grocery store or cafe or pub. Takes away a bit of the adventure, but you sure never get lost.

I was also afraid before my first travel on my own. It's necessary to take with u essential things like power bank, some cash, local SIM and medicines.

Hi Monika87, that's a coincidence, that's almost word for word what poster #11 advised.
