Hey,

I'm looking for any information about traveling Eastern Africa. My girlfriend and I are looking at it for a 6 month trip, or as long as people would recommend.
I'm game to do anything but have no idea where to start. Any recommendations about where to start and finish, where to visit and how much I should have in my pocket to be relatively comfortable while doing it.
Ideally people with 1st hand experience and info about how to approach it as a couple would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Looking forward to having a chat,

Irwin.

For relevant information you might want to specify what countries you are looking to travel as East Africa goes all the way from Egypt down to South Africa. There are a lot of countries in between;).

It seems the OP is open to ALL suggestions - the OP states they don't know where to start or finish. That assumes all the places in between, as well. Seems there is blank slate here - is the OP looking for suggestions as to where to go? A broad sweep of land indeed, but it seems clear the OP is looking for broad advice.

Possibly correct but it's a ridiculous request then! Advice I assume incudes sights to visit, how to get there, connections, visas and all the rest.

From experience, getting a visa for Eritrea or Sudan or Somaliland is a different kettle of fish to getting a visa for Kenya or Uganda.

Methods of transport - overland in your own 4x4 or a group minivan or a taxi or fly? Every country from Cape Town to Alexandria or miss out a few difficult ones? How far is not east - do we include Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia or not? And Madagascar?

Things to do: animal safari or game shooting? Tented accommodation or 5* hotels. Bungy jumping, white-water rafting, climbing mountains, meeting tribes, cruising the Nile?

It really is too broad a request.

My suggestion would be to look at the TravellersPoint guides and read a few blogs of the possible countries and then draw up a draft map with some stops, then ask more specific questions. There are lots of members here who have the experience to help but the sketchbook's pretty much totally blank at the moment.

True, but the OP asks more specifically where to even start the whole journey. The OP likely has an assortment of places to land in to begin their journey, with a very broad region (and a generous amount of time) to work with. The OP is not (yet) looking for location-specific details.

Hi,
Thanks for your response and the geography lesson. I realise that the area I asked about is huge, that is indeed the reason why I asked, no idea where would be a reasonable place to start or finish. I was hoping to spark a conversation about a potentially amazing, one off trip for us, rather than get made fun of, but again thanks for your response and safe travels.
