Hello!

I will be travelling this August to Belgrade, and I want to take the chance and travel a bit more. I will have around 4 days left after exploring Belgrade. My options are:
1) Take a bus to Budapest and spend the rest of my time there;
2) Travel a bit more through Serbia.

What would you suggest?
And if I chose Serbia, can I travel around with public transportation or do I need to rent a car?

Thank you all for your help!

I would recommend checking out Serbia as personally think it is a fascinating country. For a four day trip you might struggle with public transport around Serbia. A lot of places really are only accessible by car.

In terms of things to explore I would recommend the town of Novi Sad, Oplenac a stunning church which houses the royal tombs, archaeological site Lepenski Vir (the drive along the Danube to this sight is really nice), the mountain area of Zlatibor is another scenic area and if you can definitely try to check out Uvac Gorge.

If you really want to push further you could do the Monastery Route that takes you down to Novi Pazar. The monasteries have some really nice frescos, and the town of Novi Pazar is like entering another country as this is where the Muslim Serbs live. You could also visit Nis, the fortress is quite interesting, there are the Roman ruins of Mediana but I wouldn't recommend the Skull Tower as I found it very underwhelming. Speaking of Roman ruins Gamzigrad is a really good one. Near Nis you also have the natural formations of Đavolja Varoš.

Thanks for your reply, Teoni!

Your suggestions sound great, I'm just afraid of needing to rent a car for properly exploring Serbia.
I will try to check some rental companies!

If you go to Nis, I can recommend a visit to Nis Banja. It is a quiet little town and has a Wellbeing Centre where you can get amazing massages and other health treatments. I've been twice and stayed a few days each time. I stayed in an amazing airbnb there. You can also take the bus from Belgrade.

Car rentals are fairly cheap in Serbia, and in terms of driving the cities like most cities in Europe are crowded but once in the countryside the roads are fairly empty and I found the roads generally to be in good condition.
