Replying to a thread sometimes gives an error

Travel Forums System Talk Replying to a thread sometimes gives an error

I've had it both yesterday and today that replying to a thread with the reply box on its last page, takes a very long time to post, and results in an error message. The reply itself will have shown up on the thread long before that error message, though.
I've also seen some duplicate posts which suggest I'm not the only one with this problem.

@Peter: hope it'll be something easy and obvious to fix! :)

I've had this occasionally for many months, as has at least one other member (with said duplicate posts). It most usually, though not always, happens around 7-9am UK time.

I only got caught with a duplicate post once then remembered the same thing happening with VT, so now I just open another tab and check my post has gone through.

On VT the glitch was related with time differences and the nightly site 'rollover' but I don't think that that's the case here, because it's not the early hours of the morning in Australia?

Right, I had a good look and this and there was a rather obvious performance optimisation to be made when sending out the notifications. I suspect that was the problem (also based on some members being stuck with their post count at 0 as a result). Particularly on long threads with lots of subscribers this would be a considerable problem.

The fix is in place now. For a bonus, I also made the link in the notification now go to the exact page of the entry rather than the first page of the thread. Let me know if you stop receiving notifications or anything.

Thanks for that, Peter.

I'd noticed the '0 posts' thing on the massive UK/US thread (it started fairly recently, perhaps a couple of months ago?). I'm pleased that's fixed because sometimes I need to check back on what people have previously posted. Having to wade through umpteen pages to find out isn't much fun!

My in-site notifications seem ok today. I don't allow external notifications anyway so always post directly via the forum or via my in-site notifications. The 'replies not posting' issue happened with both, and not just on lengthy threads. I haven't encountered it this morning (UK time) so hopefully your fix has sorted it out. If not I'll post here. :-)
