I’m travelling to the USA in July August & want to hire a proper Americans car not some rebadged jap or Chinese thing. Mustang convertibles are for tourists. Who has challenger or Camaro etc at reasonable rates?

Reasonable rates? Forget it - you'll pay a premium for the type of car you want.

So if Mustang convertibles are for tourists, why not rent one? Or are you a traveller?

Anyway, you almost always rent a vehicle type, not a specific model. And actually, if you rent a convertible, next to Mustangs, you might get a Camaro convertible. Or, god forbid, a Chrysler 200...yikes.

There are ways to rent the exact model you want, but you pay a premium. Not sure how long and where you want to rent exactly, but regarding prices: compare, compare, compare. Use broker websites instead of the rental agencies themselves, as the latter are usually much more expensive.

And last but not least: be sure to have the car fully insured, no deductible etc. Enjoy and good luck!

And if you are jounger then 23 years you'll pay a huge jung-driver-fee on top.

There's a site called Turo where you rent from the owner, a lot of people put their "interesting" cars on there, and of course you don't get assigned a car type you rent the specific car.

Insurance is handled by the site I believe.

Most rental agencies don't use the less expensive American cars because they don't hold up as well. Check all the major rental agencies and then contact them to be sure you get what you want. They usually have a notice saying, "Ford Focus or similar" and you get the similar car which is not an American car. You need to make it clear that you want a specific car . . . and probably be willing to pay for it. There are agencies who rent American "muscle cars" and they charge a premium, but I got the impression you just want an American-made car, not a special high-powered one. Many foreign-named cars are made in the USA and many USA-named cars have parts (or whole cars) made outside the USA so finding an American car that is 100% American is difficult if not impossible. You could rent a Toyota Corolla that is made in the USA and driven by thousands of Americans. You might be better off renting a car in your price range and visiting some auto museums to satisfy your curiosity.

Whatever you choose, enjoy your trip.
