I am planning a trip in July to Califorinia on Amtrack. Does anyone have advice on buying tickets. Do they usually run specials in the summer? Also is it cheaper to buy tickets through a travel agent or go directly through Amtrak? Every time I talk with them on the phone they are not sure about their service. I know they advertise specials in the USA Today but is there anywhere else I can look for specials. Thanks

Booking through their website is easy enough.
They have an auction on ebay but that is usually for rail journeys and not often for just point A to B. They are always short of money so I would not expect to see sales or discounts except for qualified youth, military, and seniors.

We went from Chicago to Lake Tahoe a few years ago it was fab . . .we booked a sleeper over the internet, and got a good deal because we are not from the US. There were only three english people on the train as it trravelled across the country, the majority were US citizens. Most seem to book normal seats, and sleep in thiose . . .and that is much cheaper . . .there are however two choices of sleeping car if you have a bit more money.

We also did a short trip from Sacramento to San Francisco, that we simply booked on the day and it was fine . . no problems.

I would have a look at their internet site, since I am sure you will find deals there

have fun, it is great fun.
