If you like bears and volcanoes, I highly recommend Kamchatka in Russia's Far East. I've been traveling for more than four decades and I can say that Kamchatka is one of the most amazing trips I have ever taken. I couldn't resist the opportunity to hike on active volcanoes and to use helicopters to enter remote areas to see perhaps the highest density of brown bears on Earth.

Bob, which company did you use for your Kamchatka trip? (I'm assuming it's not easily done independently).

Yes, it's not easily done independently. The tour operator is Lost World, based in Kamchatka. However, I booked through 50 Degrees North, a travel company that has offices in Lillehammer, Norway; and Melbourne, Australia. I went on this tour, which is offered by Lost World once a year:

One of the highlights was hiking on Tolbachik volcano, which last erupted in 2012-2013. We walked on lava that flowed from that eruption. A friend put a stick in one of the crevices; and it came out in flames.

Mutnovsky volcano was another highlight, with its giant fumaroles that can seen miles away. We hiked to one of those fumaroles.

Then there were the bears. It's not often that you can see so many catching salmon.

The trip required a certain level of fitness: On Tolbachik and Mutnovsky we hiked in snow and ice on the giant volcanoes. We forged rivers and streams (in hip waders) to see bears. We used helicopters to take us to remote places in Kamchatka's interior.

Kamchatka isn't a place to travel alone. Coming down Tolbachik, I jumped into what I thought was solid ground, only to find myself deep in mud. Guide Artyom Kabakov helped get me out. Luckily I didn't lose my shoes in the mud. I saw Artyom again last year on a brief visit to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
