My in-laws are coming to visit, and I'd like for me, my wife, and my in-laws to go somewhere simple and all-inclusive where we will always have pina coladas in hand and chips and salsa at the ready. These are my only requirements, although a beach would also maybe be nice.

We're in SoCal and don't want to travel too far. We're also not crazy rich Asians, so it doesn't have to be superfancy richy-rich golf coursiness. Just a relaxing place where someone keeps a drink in our hand all weekend.

Finding this has been a lot harder than I would expect. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance!

How far is too far and when are you looking to travel? You mention a weekend in your query - is that how long you are aiming to go for?

If all you have is a weekend, suggesting Quintana Roo is indeed too far. On the subject of Mexico: Is San Jose del Cabo too far? If simple is what you're after perhaps you need to look a bit north from San Jose del Cabo and focus on Todos Santos or La Paz, BCS. Or Ensenada? Maybe even those are too far....

All inclusives are not my thing, but I think if you fill in the blanks a bit more someone may be able to suggest something.

Fair enough,

We're thinking of going from Thursday - Saturday next week. So it can't be anyplace that requires months of advance reservation. Although it would still be nice to know, I suppose, of any good places for future reference as well.

We live in Ventura County, and closer means less time spent traveling. So no, Mexico isn't too far, but if you knew of a fun place in Santa Barbara that would be even better. As an outermost limit, we don't want to have to fly further than 2 hours to get where we're going (from Bob Hope airport, e.g.).

I don't know if all-inclusives are our thing or not - we've never tried one. We only ever take adventurous, long vacations, and we usually stay in people's homes through Air BnB so we can meet locals. This is the first time my wife has requested a "relaxing" vacation, so that's why the help is... helpful. Thanks a lot!

I have a great deal of difficulty finding an actual A/I in the US. Mostly the best I can do is a hotel or condo where there is free breakfast and there is/are bars and restaurants on the property where you can eat or drink. Ensenada seems to have one or two places that are A/I.

When I think about it the best A/I places I know about are cruise ships, but I don't think you could do one next week - since 9-11 they need more advance notice than that and it usually requires a passport for most places. San Pedro has a cruise ship terminal and of course there's also one in SF.

Closest place where they would have AIs would be Los Cabos, but it will be very expensive flying next weekend, cheapest I could find was $810pp roundtrip. So change your dates to a month or two out, or reconsider the AI. I don't think you will find any or few AIs (maybe a few dude ranches or something) in the US, since unlike Mexico no one would be willing to work for $6-8 hour per day six days per week.
