Someone tried ranking the world's best road trips :

The Global Road Trip Index

To be honest I think the list is completely off. What do you think?

Gosh, I'm just happy they factored in Instagrammability.

It's the Instagrammability that's the arbitrary, subjective factor in the whole thing. Since all the costs are in pounds, it looks like it's been compiled in Britain. Any relatively expensive country is immediately on a back foot and it's this arbitrary factor that could provide the boost (NZ scores just one star on this?). How they've come up with the 'average accommodation cost' and 'average car rental cost' seems like a shot in the dark too.

Personally, I'd take it all with a very large pinch of salt.

I think it must have been made by a twelve year old "journalist" given the task of churning out a dozen such "top 10" articles a day. With apologies to twelve year olds.

When none of New Zealand, Norway or Scotland make the top ten you know something's up.

Then, in spite of being a UK-based list, they think average cost of accommodation in the UK is £144 per night. Unless your "road trip" is in central London I'd say typical is more like £80 per room. But what do I know, my only road trips this year were Scotland, Cornwall and the Isle of Man.

I see Panama did rather well! That well-known road-trip destination. :)

And why is Italy at the top? Yes, very beautiful country, lots to see and do but driving is hell over there, specially in the cities so for my road trip list It would be at the bottom, at least for Europe!

I haven't looked at the article as the mention of 'Instagrammability' put me right off the idea.
Road trips are a very personal thing and I really don't think anyone else's perspective would match mine enough to rank a list of more than 3 or 4 journeys, and that's assuming they have very similar tastes to me.

I have to laugh at it. We have roads in Montana that are spectacular for road trips. The Beartooth Highway and Going to the Sun are a couple of them. But there are no facilities along the way. Beartooth has outhouses in 2 places and one place to purchase food and knickknacks. It is also rated as one of the top motorcycle rides in the nation. Some of the turns on it are about a 300 deg turn... Yeah this is a filler piece to attract readers and has zero real information.

I don't think the author has ever been on any road trips honestly.

Unfortunately "Instagrammability" has become a deciding factor for people and their travel destinations. It probably doesn't help that people pick destinations based on instagram photos. It is a vicious cycle.
