I've decided to start a new thread rather than continue discussing this in What I'm working on: Boards thread.

The main thing that's been keeping me busy lately is a new home page for the site when you are logged in.

It will add two main new features:

1. A new stream of content from people you are following. This is to be extended to topics that you can follow. This is trying to make it easier to discover content on the site.
2. A new Add a Tip button where you can recommend points of interest or add tips about points of interest.

In addition it will just freshen up the look of the home page for you and work much more smoothly on mobile which is a very significant portion of the traffic to the site, so needs to be better catered for.

The new home page is available for testing at the moment over here. You can make it your default using the link in the left hand column. I'd appreciate it if you did this as the best way of testing it is to just pretend it's your new home.

There are still quite a few things to work on here, so you can definitely expect to find a bug or two.

And please let me know what you think!

I picked up your comment on the old thread, Peter, about updating the photo display and it now seems to be working for me as I can see all five of my photos - hurrah!

I'll have a go soon at adding a couple more tips and let you know how I get on :)

I seem to have a different issue now however I see a notice in the panel on the left that I have 2 new messages. When I click on it I get a page with:
Wooops. Sorry!
That page could not be found.
It has either been moved or something is wrong with the link.

There's a link to let you know that there's something wrong but I thought it better to flag it up here. I thought at first that the messages must be from spammers whose accounts had since been deleted, but checking my messages page via the old route I find they are both genuine messages from friends.

The other links in that panel all seem to work OK btw - blogs, photos, tip ...

Looks nice so far, the new stream of content looks nice, maybe add some new input from others (as in not my friends yet) I'm not sure how to use the 'add a tip' button, just clicking it doesn't work (yet)
For the messages, same problem as ToonSarah
I need to explore some more but thats it for now

As someone who avoids being definable through relations to others stored in a database (even one as trusted as yours) - that as, as someone who hasn't added any friends - the new homepage is extremely bare. The same will of course go for any newly registered (or unregistered / logged out) people. I'm assuming you simply haven't gotten around to implementing the alternative flow for these people for the new homepage yet? It'll be an interesting challenge to blend the flows naturally for people with few friends or with friends who aren't active.

Also, small bug: if you lack a profile picture, there's a broken image showing up there - https://photos.travellerspoint.com/27181/square_ for me - rather than the generic placeholder which is used on the profile.

Clicking on 'add a tip' does work for me so that error must be patchy.

I don't know if this is an actual bug/hitch or is it normal..But when I clicked the link to test the new homepage it automatically uploaded my profile in to the opening page..which is odd becouse I haven't been logged in before I clicked the link. So in the page were my info on the left and in the right top corner there were the LOG IN- icon. When I clicked the LOG ON icon it went to my own profile. Just to let you know

I don't know if this is possible but I would find it helpful if the links to new blog entries by friends included the name of the friend, as some use a new blog for each trip with titles that don't immediately mean anything to me. Also, if a friend has posted 10 entries overnight, as one did today, could these be somehow bunched or grouped, or only one showing on the page, as it's a long way to scroll down to see any updates from anyone else!

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Taking it all on board - either to patch bugs or improve on how it works. More updates to the page will come next week, especially to how the stream behaves.

Put up some minor adjustments

  • Fixed that broken link to the message center
  • Made it so you can see the username of the person who posted a blog entry.
  • Fixed the Add a Tip button so it should be easier to click. It previously was not clickable across the whole square which could make it seem that it wasn't working. I think that's what the problem is that some were experiencing.
